Occupation and work continue to form central identity and integration factors for the individual and society, and this applies equally to disabled and disadvantaged persons. For this reason, the transition to working life – whether direct from school or through vocational training – plays an important role, but is, however, connected with considerable difficulties in the case of people with disabilities. The keywords in this context are: inadequate preparation for the choice of profession, insufficient apprenticeships and educational training vacancies, inadequate vocational educational concepts, lack of transparency of the educational system, and insufficient opportunities for employment. Within the framework of the main issues of the research conducted by the University of Applied Sciences in Special Needs Education (Hochschule für Heilpägogik, HfH), both individual and systematic perspectives are investigated in various projects concentrated on: 1. the careers of immediately affected young people and young adults. 2. the support possibilities for the pupils and teachers and 3. the effects of the educational system with a view to the new vocational education laws.
